The brick-and-mortar giant has been gobbling up online retail startups at a record pace. Is it a path to e-commerce success or an existential crisis? Wal-Mart’s purchase of Jet.com, and the following acquisitions of Shoebuy, Moosejaw and Modcloth, demonstrate a path to cater to a wider audience, yet offer a more personalized experience through unique brands. This is new territory for Wal-Mart, who previously built a reputation with consumers of being the ultimate megastore, where they could find commodity items at the lowest prices.
