Evan Spiegel, CEO of renamed Snap Inc.,calls the video-sharing sunglasses “a toy” but sees an upside to freeing his app from smartphone cameras. The glasses are the culmination of a years-long development process described by Spiegel as “Measure a thousand times, cut once.” They have thrust his company, suddenly, into the teeming retail gadget marketplace. And they risk provoking, as anyone who recalls the saga of Google Glass knows, a fair amount of ridicule the moment they begin to appear on the pimpled faces of America’s teens.
