Today, we take it for granted that retailers will provide shoppers with a multichannel experience that gives them the ability to shop however, wherever and whenever they want. Traditional brick-and-mortar retailers have frantically invested in massive e-commerce platforms to compete with Amazon and eBay EBAY +0.53%, while online-only retailers are starting to open physical outlets. It would go against everything we know to try to be one or the other. But for every rule there are notable exceptions.
