The Supreme Court’s ruling guaranteeing the right to same-sex marriage is a victory for more than the gay community — it’s a boon for business in general and retail specifically.
The LGBT community boasts a purchasing power of roughly $800 billion annually. Same-sex partnered households make 16% more shopping trips than heterosexual households and average annual spending on consumer packaged goods is 25% higher than the average U.S. household, according to Nielsen.
Perhaps now we can all move on from the boycotts and protests. Retailers, even some considered to be very gay-friendly have made some missteps when it comes to supporting gay rights. …
